What is "stock photography"?

Stock photography is a collection of preexisting photographs that are made available for commercial use. Usually the photographer sells a customer the legal right to reproduce an image for a particular purpose, such as printing in a magazine or posting it on a web site. Every use has a different value. The value comes from the extent by which the image is used, not from the image itself.
Stock is the opposite philosophy of assignment photography, where images are custom made for a client's specific needs.

How do you determine the value of an image?

Stock photographs are priced according to usage. There are many different pricing guides available including Pickerell's and FotoQuote.
At Heliomedia, we ask for your intended use: Color or Black and White, reproduction size, number of copies distributed, where the copies will be distributed (local, regional, national, international, worldwide), whether or not you will be using electronic forms of distribution (web, CD-ROM, etc). With this information in hand we can establish a competitive price consistent with industry standards.

Why do I have to repay when I reuse an image I previously bought the rights to?

Since stock photograph reproduction rights are sold according to usage, stock photographers build their careers on selling and reselling the same collection of images. If a client asked to buy the rights to an image for exclusive and perpetual use ("his and only his forever"), the photographer would need to price the value of the image not only for that client but also for all the lost clients who cannot buy the rights to reproduce that image. That would be very expensive - in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Therefore it is better for each client to pay a little now and a little later when they need the image rather than buying everything now - which may be more than you need.
From a business point of view, this lowers the total cost of advertising and makes it eaier to gain profit from the advertising campaign.

Note to users of Netscape 4.x and other browsers.

Version 2 of heliomedia.com was designed for use by version 6 browsers (and above) and uses Cascading Style Sheets extensively. This web site does not display well on Netscape version 4.x on any platform. The version 4 Netscape browser does not display the background images and renders spaces in between the table cells. Please use a more recent version of Netscape to view this site and enjoy it fully.

Version 2 was successfully tested using Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 6 and 7 as well as Opera 7 on Windows XP systems.

It was also tested using Internet Explorer 5.2, Netscape 7 and Safari 1.0 on Mac OS X; and using Internet Explorer 5.1.6 and Netscape 6.02 on Mac OS 9.1.

It does not display properly on Opera 6.02 on Mac OS X 10.2.6.

Receiving a 404 error code?

A few subdirectories from version one are now independant sections in version 2.

Among these directories is Workshops, which used to be part of Training. Chances are your page is active but you may need to navigate to it from either the main page or via the site map.

Also, several months ago (in version one) many lesson pages were renamed index.html instead of something like "lesson02.html" in order to enable navigating directly into the directories on a Windows 2000 server without generating "Permission Denied" messages when we migrated from a UNIX box to Win2K. If a URL like lesson02/lesson02.html does not work, try lesson02/index.html.

If you still cannot load the page, please email us at webmaster@heliomedia.com.
