A POP server is the one that uses the Post Office Protocol. Its the one that receives your mail and waits for you to download it.

A SMTP server is the one that uses the Simple Mail transfer Protocol. Its the one that you send your mail to and it fowards it to the recipient's POP server.

The essential difference between POP and IMAP, from the user's point of view, is that POP downloads all the information on the server to your computer - no matter which computer it is. IMAP lets you roam from computer to computer always having access to your full mail box, with no lost messages.

Here is a screen capture of an email accounts set-up panel.
Use it to verify that you enter the right information in the right info boxes.

Here is the configuration of the software when using the mail services at John Abbott College.
